Wally Gallarello, Director
Fresh Fruit For You

As a child, much of my time before and after school was spent working with my family in our market garden. It was the early 80’s in Adelaide, and as the years passed, I developed an ambition to play a key role in the local vegetable industry; so, I went from growing and harvesting on the farm to selling our produce from the back of our family ute at the East End Markets.

Then, we fell upon hard times, and my parents were forced to close the market garden that they loved. I, on the other hand, was lucky enough to have the chance to stay in the industry, and started selling vegetables with my cousin, Domenic. When we weren’t selling produce straight out of his truck, we would set up stalls at retail outlets. Many long days were spent meeting the who’s-who of the Adelaide vegetable industry, and I began to understand what supermarkets and greengrocers wanted from growers.

From the age of eight up until I was 16, I was in and out of the markets, learning about how the industry operated and fostering networks across Adelaide. When I was offered a full-time job in wholesale at the East End Markets, I eagerly accepted, and managed to balance it with other positions at retail outlets. Around this time, the market traders had far outgrown the small premises at the East End, and so the decision was made to move to Pooraka – the site that is now known as the Adelaide Produce Markets.

After 16 years spent working at the markets, I decided to start a new chapter in my career. When an opportunity opened at Plummer’s, a produce store in Adelaide Produce Markets, I took the leap from retail to wholesale. The fast-paced, dynamic environment was contagious, and only served to reinforce my love of the industry.

It was here that I met James Plummer, who was a partner in the business. After forging a strong professional relationship, we joined forces to establish a new company: Fresh Fruit For You. Every decision that we made for the business kept the customer at the fore, prioritising a high standard of service while building long lasting friendships; this was always the way I operated, ever since I started my career. I have now taken over the business as the sole owner, but its goals and philosophy remain the same.

My team and I are forever grateful for the support and loyalty of our growers, retailers, and customers as we continue to source and provide the freshest fruit and vegetables for Australian families.
